You’ve Got Questions? We’ve Got Answers!
Here’s a short list of questions you might have about the 90 Day Challenge and tithing in general. If you have any other questions that aren’t answered here, please feel free to call The Rock of Southwest at 303-978-1761 or e-mail your questions to info@therockofsouthwest.com.
What is the difference between a tithe and an offering?
The tradition of the Old Testament tithe was a mandatory gift equaling a tenth of one’s income, but had a number of caveats. For example, Old Testament tithing applied to crops and animals from the Promised Land, not to all income in every time and place, nor was it limited to ten percent, for there were three tithes (two every year and one every three years) and many other offerings and gifts that were also part of traditional Jewish life. Offerings are any generous giving that you do over and above your tithe.
Many followers of Christ confuse giving regularly with tithing, and while giving regularly is highly commendable, and it is a big step in and of itself, tithing is taking a full 10% of your paycheck, and giving it to build God’s Kingdom.

Does tithing apply to Christians today?
Jesus called His followers to give with great generosity, which makes the tithe a good starting point. The tithe may be a helpful guideline as it reminds Christians to give proportionally to the Lord in accordance with His blessings, since God owns it all . But by New Testament standards, settling for ten percent can position you to neglect true generosity. Biblical generosity calls for loving God with all that you are, loving your neighbors as yourself, (Luke 10:25-37) and imitating the sacrificial example of Jesus (2 Corinthians 8:9; 1 John 3:16-18).

Where does my money go?
The Rock of Southwest is 100% supported through your tithes and offerings. The money you give goes toward paying ministry expenses, missionary support, rent, salaries, equipment purchases, etc. As we approach each new year and carefully and prayerfully develop our budget, we are looking through the eyes of faith into what we feel God wants us, as a church, to accomplish for Him. So, with new opportunities for ministry, we have new opportunities to touch lives and to build His Kingdom.
How is the budget decided?
A budget committee made up of staff and Elders develops the overall budget amount for the upcoming fiscal year. This is done with consideration of the potential growth in revenue and challenges in ministry. The goal is to have a budget that is attainable and realistic, but challenging. The Budget is than presented to the Elder Board for approval. The Elder Board studies the committee’s recommendation carefully and analyzes any disputed budget items. After prayer and discussion, the board approves a proposed budget that is presented to the church membership for their approval at the annual meeting. In creating the budget the committee takes into account the projected budget needs for each ministry that requires a budget line item and gives the ministry the opportunity to request funding for specific activities.
Who oversees the budget?
The church Treasure is responsible for disbursing and accounting for all funds of the Church. Each pastor and ministry head is held accountable to spend within the budget the congregation has approved for their ministry year. In addition the spending by each ministry is monitored monthly by Business Administrator and the Elder Board. Detailed monthly income and expenditure statements are available to members on request.
